about us

The Hamlets Prep School is an independent school for 180 girls aged from three to 11.

Without doubt our strength is our size: as a small and lively school we have the time and the skills to bring out the best in every girl; yet as a GDST school, we have the benefits and security of belonging to a family of schools, all hugely experienced in girls' learning. So we enjoy the best of both worlds.

Investment by the GDST in our facilities means that from September we will have a state-of-the-art language centre and art studio, in addition to the purpose-built science laboratory, ultra-modern ICT suite and computerised library we opened last year.

As a non-denominational school we welcome girls from a range of faiths and backgrounds. Our school day runs from 8.25am to 3.35pm, and we operate a special, tailor made minibus service to bring girls of both prep and pre-prep age to and from the school. Out-of-school care is available from 7.30am and after school until 5.45pm.

We provide a healthy snack in the morning and afternoon and our school cook serves up a hot lunch every day. We cater for all dietary requirements with standard, vegetarian buffet and Halal options.

In recent years many of our girls have successfully transferred to The Belvedere Academy, others have gained places at Birkenhead High School, the Bluecoats School and at other independent and state schools. Wherever they go, they are ready for the next step in their education at the secondary school of their choice.

Our highly experienced staff prepare girls for various entrance examinations, as required. Pupis are taught both verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills from seven years of age.

History

The Hamlets was originally founded in 1912 as the Junior Department of The Belvedere School, Liverpool, widely recognised as one of the best independent schools in Liverpool. Originally housed at 19 Belvidere Road, we moved to our current premises at 23 Belvidere Road in 1939.

In 2005 it was announced that The Belvedere Senior School would be transferring to Academy status. As part of this development, The Hamlets seized a unique opportunity to become an independent prep school for girls, the only one of its kind in Liverpool. Staff offer a wealth of experience in meeting the needs of girls' learning, pastoral and development needs.

About the GDST

The Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) is the largest group of independent schools in the UK, with 3,500 staff and over 20,000 students between the ages of three and 18.

As a charity that owns and runs a family of 29 schools in England and Wales, it reinvests all its income into its schools for the benefit of the pupils.

With a long history of pioneering innovation in the education of girls, the GDST now also educates boys in some of its schools, and currently has one co-educational sixth form college. For more information go to http://www.gdst.net
