At The Hamlets, our aim during Key Stage 1 is to encourage happy, confident, questioning girls, who are inquisitive about the world around them. There is a strong emphasis on exploration and discovery, which encourages imaginative ideas and builds confidence.

With our rich, balanced programme of study, we offer more than just the core requirements of the National Curriculum. Girls reach excellent standards in writing, reading and maths, and we also develop their sporting, creative and performance skills. In these early stages, a series of cross-curricular topics is designed to extend knowledge and understanding of the world.

ladybugAs well as subjects such as science, history, geography, PE and ICT, girls also have specialist teaching in French, music and performing arts, and weekly swimming lessons.

These years are a hive of activity, and our new ventures, which include partnerships with schools in China, investigative problem-solving, further developing thinking skills and ‘brain gym’, will further stretch and challenge our girls.

Stimulating teaching and learning is fostered with the use of appropriate ICT, and from September 2007 our language centre and art studio will be complete and ready for use.

With about 20 girls in each class, our staff have the time to recognise and value each child's individuality, and teachers and pupils benefit from support provided by trained teaching assistants.
